I am a retired water quality biologist with a B.S. degree in Marine Biology and 30 years of service to the NC Division of Water Quality. During that career I was involved in state and federal water quality protection through my own organization as well as the working with the USEPA and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and was pretty successful at publishing some of our work. I served as president of the Carolinas Chapter of SETAC and on the steering committee of SETAC's Whole Effluent Toxicity Experts Advisor Panels.
I managed water quality programs including aquatic toxicology, ambient water quality monitoring, phytoplankton monitoring, special surveys, microbiology analyses and inorganic chemical analyses. Credentialed as a Certified Public Manager, I was inducted to North Carolina's Order of the Long Leaf Pine for service to the citizens of NC.
I am currently a Notary Public in Wake County, NC
Away from work, my life has always revolved around water sports. My youth was spent fishing, mostly in saltwater. My mid-life and most of my working years were spent SCUBA diving, ultimately achieving certifications in cave diving, divemaster and EPA/NOAA working diver. In 2000, my wife and I began whitewater kayaking and joined the Carolina Canoe Club (CCC) in 2003. I served as president of the 1,100-member CCC for 2006 and 2007 and continued on its Board of Directors through 2009.
In 2007 I was certified by the American Canoe Association as a River and Whitewater Kayak Instructor (and in 2008 as an advanced whitewater kayak Instructor) and have enjoyed teaching kayaking skills to a whole new generation of boaters. In September 2007, I was honored by being appointed to the Board of Directors of the American Canoe Association and hope to be able to use my skills and experiences in water quality and regional paddling clubs at the national level. In January 2008, the membership of the ACA voted me into a 2-year term to the ACA Board. In 2010 I was reelected to the Board. I’m currently still serving as the ACA’s Secretary and as Board liaison for ACA’s Safety Education and Instruction Council.
In 2008 I began volunteer work on the Falls Whitewater Park Committee (now Incorporated) to advocate development of an instream whitewater park below Falls Lake dam by the city of Raleigh.
Beginning in 2008 I developed Triangle Kayak as a focal point of my kayak teaching activities with Paddle Creek. My wife Nancy and I still enjoy backpacking and photography as well as every new gadget that comes along.
